Uninstalling the nvidia binary drivers and sticking with nouveau along with
re-enabling the unity plugin from CCSM made unity reappear. Try to check if
the unity plugin in enabled first.
However, the nouveau driver has a whole new set of regressions. So the
desktop is pretty broken on 'R' currently.
