@Richard Senior that's correct! sometimes the desktop is white fully... (sorry, my english is bad... I'm trying...) ... So... reboot not is required... Follow the steps is you are using ubuntu/debian:
1. Press CTRL + F1, then enter your user linux and password.
2. In the bash, type: sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart (if you are using Gnome)
3. Enter your password user.
