Talked to shirish in IRC today, and he was using largefiles (which creates 1MB inodes). I tested in a vmware and within 1 second into install, 5000 files were unpacked on disk, completely depleting all the inodes on my 5GB test root.

So, it's not really a d-i bug, but rather a user error.
