With Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin) I am able to get it working using PulseAudio by using a custom ~/.asoundrc fix by Brebs that was intended for Doom3: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1304228.html
Just set in ~/.etqwcl/base/etqwconfig.cfg:
seta s_driver "alsa" seta s_alsa_pcm "pcm.doom3-surround51"
Also works for Quake 4. Doom3 still requires pasuspender but otherwise the sound is stable.
