What I was trying to say there before my lack of browser skills interrupted me was that I've added some notes about this problem to the ALSA bug tracker. In the short term, this can be fixed by reverting this change to alsa-lib: http://hg-mirror.alsa-project.org/alsa-lib/diff/23c4c0f5de40/src/pcm/plugin_ops.h

Longer term, the idea behind that change is good (it improves the output quality), but the implementation has a slight problem.
