Based on point 6 in Ben Selinger's first comment on 2010-05-25, I found an alternative work around to quitting and restarting Rhythmbox.
After stopping playback of a Last.fm station, select a different Last.fm station by double-clicking on it. After a new playlist is displayed in the lower portion of the window, click on Play and the new Last.fm station will start playing.
If you want to continue playing a Last.fm station after stopping playback, select a different Last.fm station by double-clicking on it. After a new playlist is displayed in the lower portion of the window, select the original Last.fm station by double-clicking on it. After a new playlist is displayed in the lower portion of the window, click on Play and the original Last.fm station will start playing, although with a new play list.
