Is there anyway that Ubuntu could automatically add an SMB user when you first share a folder? I can just imagine people still coming on ubuntuforums saying that sharing doesn't work, and we'd have to point them to create an SMB user first, so there's not really much difference than having to do the command line bit after expecting to be done with an action (although I agree a GUI is better than nothing). Or maybe a first time setup wizard for Samba with smbpassword in mind?
It's too bad "security=share" and "encrypt passwords=no" is so insecure b/c it's very convenient and what Windows users are used to.
