I've become so desperate with the state of local file sharing that I actually discovered "gshare", which is a built-in FTP using Avahi. Works perfectly, and no headaches. Of course this is no solution for samba, it's just a workaround in the meantime: http://yimports.com/~cpinto/projects/gnome/gshare/
