This really needs to be changed in Hardy. PAM synchronisation of users sounds like a great idea, and security=user should be enabled by default, so users do not unwittingly open themselves up to attack. However, the shared folders tool must provide an obvious option to allow anonymous access, as many users are used to this being the default behaviour when they share folders on windows.

Perhaps my situation is aberrant, but I live in a house with 3 housemates, all of whom have PCs. They each share their useful documents and media as read only folders on Windows XP. We have become very used to accessing each others computers to get at the file we want, usually a video or mp3. However, the method Ubuntu seems to suggest would require either creating my housemates user accounts on my PC, or allowing them access to my user name and password.

If Ubuntu had an easy-to-use option that mirrored the way windows shared folders, and provided the user a warning about security, it would make the whole OS a lot more usable for me.
