Confirming error, i even did a fresh install to check.

Feb 20, jaunty x86_64

greg@greg-desktop:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/samba status
 * nmbd is running
 * smbd is not running
greg@greg-desktop:~$

On my 32 bit machine the error does not occur.

Is this possibly an AppArmor issue?
