Could you check the status of the samba daemons:
$ sudo status nmbd
$ sudo status smbd

Please describe your scenario in more detail ("samba is not working" is not enough, given how many different uses of samba are possible). Are you sharing folders on workstations ? Setting up a samba file server ? Accessing remotely-shared folders ?
