This problem still exists in Gutsy:
locate -V
Secure Locate 3.1 - Released March 7, 2006

(pool/main/s/slocate/slocate_3.1-1ubuntu3_i386.deb )

But apparently not in Hardy:
locate -V
mlocate 0.18
