Squirrelmail can store your adressbook and preferences in a database ( postgesql / mysql ) but it's optional to the admin if you don't configure your database squirrelmail uses plain files to store address book and preferences

Some Squirrelmail plugins use different files for storage and don't use the database to store the user's data.
