That is interesting.

There are a couple more commands that I would like to output
of if you could, sorry for not asking for them the first time.

dpkg -S /var/lib/python-support/python2.4/bootconfig
readlink -e /var/lib/python-support/python2.4/bootconfig

I see that you had the backport of startupmanager installed,
and so I think that may well be the source of the problem,
I will investigate that area further.

You should find the package which provides the
crashing applets and report a bug on that. Are you
getting crash notification for them? That would
be the best way to do it if you are.
