Given that this won't be fixed in time for the release, any chance that an item could be added to the

page warning people that installing or upgrading on older kernels will fail because of this issue (along with bug #552816)?

(As mentioned in this bug report, it definitely fails on 2.6.18; based on the discussionin Debian BTS #563726 it sounds like this may apply to kernels uip to 2.6.21, though I don't have any way to test anything other than 2.6.18 myself.)
