Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem

Description of the problem:
While downloading an mp4 video to the desktop (while also watching it within totem) apport popped up and mentioned that the thumbnailer had crashed.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Download http://media1.podtech.net/download.php?file=media/2007/03/PID_010739/Podtech_Joel_Spolsky_interview.mp4 to ~/Desktop .

Expected results:
Thumbnailing to only occur when file is completely downloaded/timestamp stops changing frequently. No crash to occur when thumbnailing.

Actual results:
Attempts at thumbnailing can take place before the file is fully downloaded. Thumbnailing sometimes crashes.

How reproducible is this bug:
I have yet to attempt to reproduce although a second apport crash report window for gnome-thumbnailer popped up while I was filing this bug (the site this mp4 is downloading from seems to limit the speed to 40Kbytes/s).

The bad stack trace may be down to /usr/bin/gnome-video-thumbnailer being a symlink to /etc/alternatives/gnome-video-thumbnailer which is a symlink to /usr/bin/totem-video-thumbnailer . Running
gdb --core=CoreDump /usr/bin/totem-video-thumbnailer
still gives a strange backtrace though (totem-gstreamer-dbgsym 2.18.0-0ubuntu2 is installed).

This happened to me when I had a directory of unfinished bittorrent media and the thumbnailer was trying to process the media files in konqueror.

Changed in totem:
status: Unconfirmed → Rejected

I wonder if this has anything to do with my XFS drive being slow deleting video files?

This happened to me for no obvious reason, was not downloading a file, computer had just booted and was sitting on the desktop. and am using ext3, not XFS so thats not the likely culprit

Totem crashed when closing a totem window that got stuck when running a .mkv file and disabling subtitles.
