I suspect bugs #1081245, #1082909, #1084627, and #1085991 are all related to this, and perhaps dupes (at least, all have hangs at the same point). I didn't compare syslogs to see if they are indeed dupes.

From the comments it sounds like this can occur when there are existing partitions set up on the disk that somehow confuse ubiquity. A number of users report working around the problem by deleting all partitions and trying again, however in situations where you want multiple ubuntu's installed side-by-side, that obviously won't work.

I've been able to reproduce this bug on two out of three systems (two desktops failed; one laptop worked fine). I've tried both with and without checking "download updates while installing" and "include third-party software", which didn't change the behavior. Tried both going directly into the installer, vs. booting into the live environment and then loading the installer.
