This is interesting... The kubuntu live cd has packages from a few weeks ago instead of current ones:

ubiquity 1.11.14
ubiquity-casper 1.157

The kernel is also old:

# uname -a
Linux ubuntu 2.6.28-8-generic #26-Ubuntu SMP Wed Feb 25 04:28:54 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

I tried installing with the today's regular ubuntu live cd which has these packages/kernel and everything worked great:

ubiquity 1.11.14
ubiquity-casper 1.157

# uname -a
Linux ubuntu 2.6.28-8-generic #28-Ubuntu SMP Fri Mar 6 00:09:20 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux
