This problem is fixed in ubiquity 1.10.6, which did not make it in time to be on the daily snapshot for 20081015, but should be in tomorrow's snapshots.
For those wishing to test it out before the next snapshot is built, boot the live cd, and then run:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubiquity
apt-cache policy should show that you now have ubiquity 1.10.6 installed. Running "sudo ubiquity" should now let a manual partition-based install complete. Please reopen this bug if it does not.
