Comment 29 for bug 53040

I managed to recover from this problem by reinstalling coreutils, libc6 and dpkg:

sudo apt-get install --reinstall coreutils libc6
sudo apt-get install --reinstall dpkg

But still the question remains what had happened? What was the problem?
