I had the same problem, unable to upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 that resulted from having previously upgraded KDE. I preformed the suggested steps:

      A alternative (and prefered way) to test is:
      $ bzr get lp:~ubuntu-core-dev/update-manager/maverick
      $ cd maverick/DistUpgrade
      $ sudo ./dist-upgrade

Upgrade completed with no issues. Thanks.
