I changed the panel itself. The lower part of the LCD crazed over, as happens with many dell laptops. The original panel was a WUXGA (1920x1200), but a replacement for that is too expensive. Hence I bought a WXGA+ (1440x900) screen.

This screen was detected immediately by the BIOS, and also by X when booted. The only problem was in usplash.conf, which still read 1920x1200 and hence the boot process would hang + blank screen when it tried to splash.

It would be great if usplash did a re-detect on boot, just as the live cd would.
