Bug Description

Binary package hint: usplash

After the latest upgrades of usplash and console-setup, I can't get gdm to start anymore and I'm also unable to switch to any ttys after usplash has finished. All I get is a blank screen.
If I remove splash from the boot parameters, the system starts fine.

console-setup-1.13ubuntu6
usplash-0.4-35
kernel 2.6.20-5-generic

I have that very same as well.

My computer is a Thinkpad T42 with a radeon mobility 7500 gfx.

I load the radeonfb (to avoid power loss when suspending to ram) module (put radeonfb in /etc/initramfs/modules and run update-initramfs)

same package versions as above.

Same symptoms on Thinkpad X40 with Intel 915 graphics. 0.4-34 works fine.

Please try the attached patch against /etc/init.d/usplash.

According to the usplash changelog, the setupcon call was removed, because a initramfs hook is now used. Yet, you still need to write usplash_write QUIT.
So the trick with setting CONSOLE_SCREEN to true.

I can confirm this bug with usplash on my system (Thinkpad x60s with Intel 965 graphics), usplash 0.4-37: I never get a console/X server after boot unless I delete "splash" from the kernel command line. And I can also confirm that the fix proposed by Michael Biebl (set CONSOLE_SCREEN to true) makes my system work again.

I've try the "usplash stop" patch. It works fine (with a intel 845 graphics device).

Before applying this patch, I had to restart the computer about 3 times to got the gdm screen (without changing anything, just restarting with reset).

Each time it doesn't load, I can see a strange image at the bottom of the screen and the cursor moving after few seconds. Then the monitor switch off and on (displaying the strange image). Then the monitor switch off and on again but doesn't display anything.

The patch was working for me til an ugrade of usplash (I upgraded the file and then added "true" as the path could have done).
So the bug is still there for me.

Maybe this patch didn't help me at all. I'm in trouble with an other bug : https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-i810/+bug/28326
