Above messages are seen on stdout after running vlc on the commandline. Vlc does not even show any GUI, it simply seems to crash.
I noticed vlc stopped working after an automatic upgrade today of xserver:
xserver-xorg-core (2:1.3.0.0.dfsg-12ubuntu8) to 2:1.3.0.0.dfsg-12ubuntu8.2
When above xerver version is forced back to 8, vlc works again. So the bug might also be in xserver iso vlc.
