You're correct. Pardon my loop! I meant to reference this one: https://bugs.launchpad.net/indicator-sound/+bug/1208204 .

In message #5 of #1208204, Daniel Letzeisen specified a patch that fixed both symptoms for me (crashing ceased and volume control item now works). I believe that it has to do with the fact that the indicator-sound-service was specified incorrectly and, hence, never invoked.
