Spoke to him in IRC and fglrx was there because he had pyopencl installed which pulls it in apparently. The GLX error is to be expected unfortunately in that case and wasn't what was stopping him from logging in, it broke startx which tries to use a unity session but his session was messed up because of something in his ~/.gnupg
