On my other system the alpha 3 live CD comes up in 1280x960 @ 85Hz .
card: radeon9500
monitor: Hyundai 7695 (horiz 30-95kHZ, vert 50-150 Hz)

On the radeon8500 system, the monitor is IIyama S700JT1
