go to /etc/X11/xorg.conf
edit xorg.conf to include the following two lines near the end.
Option "MonitorLayout" "LVDS,CRT" Option "MetaModes" "680x480,1680x1050"
Save and re-boot. That did it for me. Second Metamode option should be your screen's resolution.
