Xpress 200M is known to have problems, because developers lack some memory handling specific information about the chipset. However, I think it should work in 2D mode. Could you test for example with the latest Ubuntu 7.04 development version? http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/feisty/herd-3/ .
