"I initially attributed this to a hardware problem, but I've actually swapped the video card and disk into a completely different machine and the problem has recurred. The only other explanation is that the video card itself is failing and bringing the system down with it."

The most likely cause of strange unexplained hangs isn't hardware failure, but a poorly performing power supply.
