The "Safe Graphics Mode" in the CD boot menu is supposed to do exactly that, to force the use of the "vesa" driver. Anyway, since the X1?00 cards are not supported by the "ati" driver, the "vesa" driver should automatically be picked. (And the user can then later install the "fglrx" driver by using the Restricted Drivers Manager.

Note that any issues with X1?00 cards are totally off-topic for this bug for the same reasons.
