Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-i810-modesetting

After installing xserver-xorg-video-i810-modesetting, and restarting, the screen goes blank. I can hear the sound of gdm starting, so I know the computer has not crashed - but the screen stays blank. Installing xserver-xorg-video-i810 and restarting the computer resolves the problem. I don't know which additional logs I can post, but please let me know and I will get what ever information may be required to help resolve this.

Steps to reproduce:
Install xserver-xorg-video-i810-modesetting via apt and restart the laptop.

Version:
1.6.5.git20061014.ac1-1ubuntu4

Hardware:
Dell Inspiron 640m Laptop
i915 graphics chipset
14" LCD Screen
1440x900 native resolution.

Same problem here, using Dell Inspiron 9400 laptop, Intel 945GM video card, 17'' LCD screen, 1440x900 native resolution.

According to http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=415061,

"getting the current Debian package source from experimental and changing the value of I9XX_P2_LVDS_SLOW_LIMIT to 90000 helped. The recompiled driver now works."

2.0rc3 works perfectly for me in Feisty!! I removed 915resolution and the normal i810 driver, then switched the laptop off to make extra sure. It worked like a charm :-)

I did not reconfigure X though, so I'm still using the old xorg.conf file. I'm assuming that that's ok.

I can confirm the same as Tim.
I can add that in System -> Preferences -> Screen resolution, I'm offered 1440x1440 (among others). My laptop's screen native resolution is 1440x900. If I choose 1440x1440 then my desktop is bigger than my screen.

I found a new issue in 2.0rc3: Suspend hangs my computer.
This is not an issue using xserver-xorg-video-i810 + 915resolution in Feisty.

It can be solved by setting USE_DPMS=false in /etc/default/acpi-support.

I had a similar issue in Edgy using xserver-xorg-video-i810, reported as bug #74330 (the difference is that in Edgy I ended up with no video and was able to ctrl+alt+del, but in Feisty + intel 2.0rc3 the system hangs), but I solved it the same way.

The original problem is solved, closing.

Juan, please file a new bug if it doesn't work out-of-the-box in Gutsy.
