I'll attach a new log file.

I started a gnome session with the external display attached. Pretty early in the startup process gnome-settings-daemon turns off the external display (through xrandr 1.2, I believe).

Please write back if you want me to do anything special before posting the log file, such as enabling the external display, disabling the pipe-a-hack, or whatever.
