This bug is causing data loss so should be taken seriously. I've logged https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-notifier/+bug/348469 on a hunch (different package but maybe explains cause).

I know Jaunty just hit Beta and is almost out the door, but I believe this is serious. If someone can assist me in getting update-notifier to log at a debug level maybe that would provide a clue, but of course it may take several days and confirmation from others...
