    properly implementing multi-locale/language lookup is too intrusive for

  * debian/update-gnome-menus-cache: Fix crash on invalid UTF-8 in
    translations, fall back to untranslated string. (LP: #531412)
  * debian/python-gmenu.postinst, debian/rules: Install
    update-gnome-menus-cache into /usr/share/gnome-menus instead of /usr/bin.
    It's a private implementation detail, not something that users should
    run/see. (LP: #540813)
  * debian/update-gnome-menus-cache: Ignore other exceptions during
    translation as well (such as IndexError), and fall back to untranslated

    - 22_desktop-cache.patch: Set correct basename (missing .desktop
      extension).
    - 22_desktop-cache.patch: Create CachedDir subdirectories for subdirectory
      groups, so that the file-ids have "subdirectory-" prepended.
    - debian/update-gnome-menus-cache: Prepend subdirectory to group names, to
      preserve correct file path.
    - This fixes wrong location of software-center (LP: #494607), menu entries
      appearing twice after a package upgrade, and gnome-screensaver not
      finding its themes (LP: #494669)

  * debian/update-gnome-menus-cache: Print an error message instead of
    crashing if gmenu can't be imported. This provides clean upgrades from
    hardy. Thanks to Michael Vogt for spotting!
  * debian/update-gnome-menus-cache: Rewrite using python-xdg and parsing the
    .desktop files directly, instead of using tree_lookup(). The latter is
    specific to a particular menu and thus forgets about e. g. capplets.

  • gnome-menus (2.28.0.1-0ubuntu2) lucid; urgency=low

  * Add 22_desktop-cache.patch: Support a desktop.<localename>.cache file in
    e. g. /usr/share/applications/ to speed up menu loading. Those are
    generated with update-gnome-menus-cache <dir>.
  * Add debian/update-gnome-menus-cache: Script to generate a cache file.
    Install it in debian/rules.
  * debian/python-gmenu.{postinst,triggers}: (Re)generate the cache for
    /usr/share/applications on package install/upgrade or when the directory
    changes.
