Linux Mint Tools

Description:
============
This PPA contains my take on several Linux Mint 19.x tools, including
features not wanted for the official releases while I was still a member
of the Linux Mint dev team, like full support for installing and updating
mainline kernel builds via Update Manager.

For the details on the ever growing list of changes I refer you to the
changelogs of the respective packages. Note that in my version of Update
Manager you can access changelogs also via the History of Updates window.

Installation on Linux Mint:
===========================
After adding the PPA (see the "Adding this PPA to your system" section
below), refresh your Update Manager. On a clean installed LM 19.2/19.3 you
will see updates to a few packages from my PPA.

After you installed the update to mint-common then an update for Update
Manager itself will become available. On other editions and installs that
upgraded to 19.2 you will get the Update Manager update right away.

You will have to start Update Manager again because it will exit. After
Update Manager has been updated, more updates from the PPA become
available.

Installation on other platforms:
================================
To install from the PPA, you must first have Ubuntu's universe repo and on
18.04 also the backports repo enabled.

On 18.04-based systems you can install Update Manager like this:

sudo apt-get install mintupdate/bionic

On later OS releases leave out the /bionic part.

Some functionality may be unavailable on non-Linux Mint platforms - the
mintsources package intentionally cannot even be installed (all the
functionality is in software-sources, anyway). I also recommend not to
install mintsystem, the part you may be interested in is in apt-plus.

Known issue on LM 19/19.1:
==========================
The mintmenu and mozo packages can only be installed if you have MATE 1.22
available in your software sources (typically via the Linux Mint 19.2 Tina
repositories). If you need to install the official mintmenu or mozo
package on LM 19/19.1 while having this PPA enabled you'll need to specify
the source, i.e. 'apt install mintmenu/tessa' or 'apt install
mintmenu/tara' depending on your release, similar for mozo.

Unfortunately this is the only way I can offer a single PPA for all point
releases and editions of LM 19.x.

address used in the changelogs but I may take longer to see it.

Do not report bugs with the packages from this PPA to the Linux Mint dev
team. These are unofficial packages that in some cases do very
significantly differ from the official versions or do not even exist in
official Mint. That said, there are some packages that I copied straight
from the official Linux Mint daily builds PPA, as identified below in the
Uploaded by column.

Removing the PPA:
=================
If you want to go back to the official versions you need to downgrade the
packages - for that you can run software-sources to remove this PPA and
then use the "Remove packages not available from sources" as well as the
"Replace packages from unavailable sources" options on the maintenance
page. Or go back to a system snapshot from before you installed the PPA.

On foreign platforms you can just
sudo apt-get purge --autoremove mintupdate
(or whatever other packages you installed)
