The team page:

This is an audio recorder application for the GNOME 3 and Ubuntu's Unity Desktops.

This amazing program allows you to record your favourite music and audio to a file. It can record audio from your system's soundcard, microphones, browsers, webcams & more. Put simply; if it plays out of your loudspeakers you can record it. This can also record your Skype-calls automatically.

It has an advanced timer that can:
* Start, stop or pause recording at a given clock time.
* Start, stop or pause after a time period.
* Stop when the recorded file size exceeds a limit.
* Start recording on voice or sound (user can set the audio threshold).
* Stop or pause recording on "silence" (user can set the audio threshold and delay).

The recording can be atomatically controlled by MPRIS2-compatible media players.
Skype. It can also record all your Skype calls without any user interaction.

This program supports several audio (output) formats such as OGG audio, Flac, MP3 and WAV.

The installation is very easy. Run these commands on the command line:

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:osmoma/audio-recorder
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install audio-recorder

You will also need to install one or more of these packages to add support for various audio-formats.
gstreamer1.0-plugins-base (OGG format)
gstreamer1.0-plugins-good (WAV and Flac formats)

gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly (MP3 format)

gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad (AAC, m4a format)

Notice: The recorder now requires Gstreamer 1.0.

Notice also:
Fluendo's gstreamer0.10-fluendo-mp3 package provides MP3-playback, but it has no recording capabilities. Playback only.
Start the program from Applications -> Sound & Video menu or search for it in the Dash (audio....).
Or start it from the command line:
You can start/pause and stop recording by right-clicking the launcher button (in Unity) or from the indicator icon on the top-panel.
The source code is available from:

You can control the recorder from command-line with the --command option. See audio-recorder --help for more information.

Aditional guides and fixes:
If you are recording from a microphone, please check the [Input] settings in gnome-volume-control. The input volume is often too low. Please study this picture:

You may need to change the sound configuration on some computer systems. Please take a look at this picture.
Install and start "pavucontrol" and set the configuration to "Analog Stereo Duplex" and test the recording. This may fix the recording if you get "empty" audio files.

See also this example that records both audio output (loudspeakers) and microphone(s). (thanks to Matthew).
Useful to tape-up Google+ hangouts and similar events.
