infinality-ultimate

Ubuntu packages with bohoomil's infinality-ultimate patches; see https://github.com/bohoomil/fontconfig-ultimate and https://plus.google.com/+bohoomil-infinality-bundle.
The goal of these patches is to provide optimal font rendering quality through improvements to the freetype library combined with global and per-font tweaking features through fontconfig. The github repository above contains additional font configuration files. The cairo package is built with a (tiny) patch that makes it honour settings made through fontconfig (not sure how necessary that is with cairo 1.13+).
In my not-so-expert opinion, the improvements are clearly visible even on the LCD panel of my lowly Acer Aspire One (AO722) netbook.

All packages in here are built with those of the original patches from 14.04 "Trusty" that still apply.

For optimal results, make sure infinality-settings.sh (in /etc/profile.d) gets read, or /etc/fontconfig-infinality-ultimate/infinality-settings.csh if you use a shell from the csh family. It may also help to copy or symlink /etc/profile.d/infinality-settings.sh into $HOME/.kde/env if you use a KDE desktop environment.

Packages in here are built with gcc-6 (6.2 as of this writing), with -O3 -ftracer and link-time optimised.

More conservative packages can be obtained from https://launchpad.net/~no1wantdthisname/+archive/ppa (which served as my inspiration for this ppa).

20161204: I've been asked to provide builds for 16.04 "Xenial" too. This is an experimental work in progress which currently I cannot test myself and is done under the assumption that the only required change is the instruction for which OS version the package has to be built.
