Unity Desktop with Global Systray Whitelist
This PPA provides a patched version of the Unity Desktop that reverts the horrible decision by Canonical to remove the systray whitelist. This bug was reported here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/974480 and "fixed" in the 6.12.0daily13.02.07-0ubuntu1 build. This PPA provides the latest Unity build with all patches applied *EXCEPT* the one that removes the systray whitelist. I have attached my diff to the original bug report so anybody who wishes can apply the patch to their own branch of Unity and revert this change.
**** UPDATE ****
With 13.10 Canonical removed support for the com.canonical.Unity.Panel schema altogether. Rather than hunt down where this was done I created a new patch that simply whitelists _all_ systray applications. So now you just need to enable this ppa and restart unity to get your systray icons back.
**** Below information is outdated. Kept for historical reference only ****
Note: These packages do not auto-whitelist anything. You will still need to edit your whitelist to see systray items like this:
gsettings get com.canonical.Unity.Panel systray-whitelist
Set Whitelist (this example will Whitelist everything):
gsettings set com.canonical.Unity.Panel systray-whitelist "['all']"
