Bug Description

In precise, one could add a Google account in gnome-online-accounts, and its contacts would show up in gnome-contacts. This is broken in quantal.

To reproduce from a fresh account:
1. Start gnome-contacts.
2. At the prompt for choosing between “Online Accounts” and “Use Local Address Book”, click “Online Accounts”.
3. Click “+”, select Account Type “Google”, follow the prompts to log into a Google account.
4a. In precise, the gnome-contacts window immediately switches to prompt you to choose between “Local Address Book” and “Google”. Click “Google” and “Select”, and after a little while, all your Google contacts show up.
4b. In quantal, nothing happens. The prompt from step 2 has not changed, and there is no way to select “Google”. (If you choose “Local Address Book”, then the only option under “Change Address Book” from the menu will be “Local Address Book”.)

Dylan McCall (dylanmccall) wrote :

This appears to be happening because gnome-contacts does not talk to Ubuntu Online Accounts. In Quantal, Empathy (among others) uses ubuntu-online-accounts instead of gnome-online-accounts. Gnome Contacts should probably do the same. As it is, the software is broken in Ubuntu.

Yeah! Why use a working solution when you can create your own and break the one that worked? Way to go Ubuntu!

This bug would affect several users. I can't sync calendar and contacts in ubuntu 12.10.

Same problem for me. I noticed that in "Online accounts", Shotwell and Empathy are the only applications integrated by my Google account...

Could this also be related to the fact that it seems impossible to add a gmail account to evolution /

This should have higher priority IMHO as Gmail has many users and this is a core function. I hope it is fixed until the quantal release.

Cmon why did you break this? Whats the advantage of not using GOA?

I believe this is because evolution-data-server was broken (see bug 1049028 for details). This should be fixed when that bugfix is uploaded into Quantal.

Still persistent in Raring! Is there any progress on this issue?

It appears the option to even add an online account is completely nonexistent in Quantal for me. That's after going into dconf editor and changing the "did-initial-setup" value to false. It would be nice to get some news on the status/concern of this particular bug and what the plans are for future development in later releases (Raring).

This appears to be fixed in saucy. On starting it and selecting 'all contacts' I can see all my google contacts. Trying to change the address book only seems to take effect on close/open, though.

So let me see if I understand this… global contacts sync used to work, but now it doesn't because you implemented $NEW_THING which doesn't actually do anything?

 ಠ_ಠ

I switched from Mac to deal with this kinda crap? Global contacts is a fundamental “must just work” UX function.

I also have this problem in the latest version of Ubuntu, 14.04, not the end of the world, but it's still quite annoying, as others said things like Contacts and Calendar sync are very basic/standard features in todays world, Ubuntu is trying to be the "Linux distro for everyone", trying to get more "everyday" users, but that's never going to happen with bugs effecting basic features like Contacts, Mail, and Calendar.

Hi, I've spent the last couple of days trying to sync my google contacts with my ubuntu 14.04 64bit desktop.
the online accounts under settings logs into my google account fine.

gnome-contacts wont import my contacts list, when i select use online account it opens the online account accounts panel under settings which shows my gmail account is switched on and connected, but thats all it does.

I installed evolution to try, kept asking me for my gmail password, with password incorrect dialog box popping up, so no joy there.

Read heaps of info, as you do when tyring to find a solution, didn't matter what i tried, dconf to ensure inital gnome contact done was clear. removed both online account passwords from the keyring using seahorse, tried various plugins e.t.c.

I've given up and rolled my system back to before I tried to sync my contacts. I dont use (or want) an email program on my system, I use firefox for my email, It would be nice to have just my contacts on my desktop as they are on my phones, tablets e.t.c. (most are andriod).

I believe this bug is still a current issue.
If you have a mailing list for when it's fixed please add me to it.
Any suggestions of other contacts type programs that I can try, please let me know
Thanks
