NM applet icon do not indicate mobile broadband access technology

Bug Description

It would be nice if the NM applet would indicate which broadband access technology that is used, like "E" for edge, "H" for 3.5 G, "H+" for HSPA+ and "L" for LTE.

I see there is code in nm-applet do do this, but it does not seem to work.

It is space in the upper left corner for some white (?) indicators in the Ubuntu theme.

It seems like the icons are intentionally empty, like the file /usr/share/icons/ubuntu-mono-dark/status/24/nm-tech-gprs.svg

No. This is AFAIK a conscious decision to no clutter the icon and use "symbolic" icons; and at the very least not related to that bug's fix.

Should definitely be confirmed by design though; I too would somewhat like to see those.

Rather than the suggestions in description, it is more likely to be "4G", "3G", etc. which already have icons.

That being said, this isn't going to be fixed for 12.10, we've already missed the cutoff.

Nothing to be done for nm-applet upstream; so I'm removing the project entry -- the code is already there, things will work as long as the icons are available with technology hints and the icon names changed slightly in the nm-applet indicator patch.

We should figure out how competitors distinguish technology hints for mobile (ie. how it is done on Android, Windows, Chrome OS); to have things make the most sense possible -- maybe we don't want to use the icons as they seem to already be available in GNOME and use E, H+, etc.

As a note; I should really shovel in the changelogs for nm-applet and the icon themes to find out why these were dropped in the first place; or at least who did the upload so that I can ask them ;)

If it is too little space to display all information, the icon could be split in two (or made wider) as in Android, one for signal quality and one for technology type/traffic indication.

Windows has no similar common software as NM, at least until Windows 8, but relies on third party dialers.

Android uses what I referred to above, and 'G' for GPRS and '4G' for LTE.

iPhone uses 'E', '3G', '4G'/'LTE': http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1976

I tried digging in the history of the icons and found there the pointer to the bug referred to above.
