Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

My update-manager crashed saying some files where not available (i got 404ś on the site where the files supposed to be) . I filed a bug report and the answer of one of the tech was that he doens't accept bugs with unsupported repositories. Only then I got the message and deleted some of the repositories.

I wish the Update-manager told me right away that:
- the errors where related to unsupported repositories
- removing the unsupported repositories would be wise
- telling me how to remove the unsupported repositories (inclusing pressing 'apply'' in Apt - which i didn't the first time. I removed them and they were gone, I wrongly thought...)

Confirmed, from answers of launchpad too many user ask on:

dpkg --configure -a

this is a message coming from update-manager (we need more info when there is an error)...

but nothing tell use simply to

Please open a terminal and type 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' give your user password when requested then press enter.

Or better why update-manager don't show to the user a dialog window with a button or choice to make this automatically.

Thank you

I agree with the change Marcobra recommended. This is something that often appears on mailing list and in launchpad questions/answers.

New users do have issues with this, especially when the error is thrown by synaptic. This should be changed in the interests of improving the usability of Ubuntu and improving the new user experience.

Hi, it had to do with the update manager not installing or accessing the updates from the web. I'm an Australian living in England. I've not done anything Ubuntu related recently as I've been on deadline for work.
