Resume after hibernate or suspend triggered by Actions button dialog in Xubuntu doesn't ask password

I'm not convinced this is a xubuntu bug.

I have exactly the same. Installed XFCE on Ubuntu with GNOME. Gnome resumes screenlock, XFCE not.

Same thing in Xubuntu 8.10 Alpha5.

Maybe some people prefer not to have password asked by their computer; supposedly same people who have enabled automatic login. IMO this should be configurable.

I'm confirming this bug, I confirmed it on Xubuntu Intrepid, and on Hardy. I don't think we can fix this in time for Intrepid, so we should try and fix it in jaunty, then do an SRU for Intrepid and Hardy.

I have the same issue. I'm using the XFCE desktop installed over Ubuntu 9.04.

This a major security issue for many of us who prefer to put their computers on hibernate instead of shutting down. Anyone can access the contents of the computer after resuming from hibernate or suspend.

The developer in the Xfce Bugzilla (http://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4805) says that this should not be dealt with as a problem in xfce-session. He suggests it's rather a problem of either the power manager or the panel / the panel applets.

Power Manager:
I have discovered that my Xubuntu Jaunty shipped with the gnome-power-manager instead of the xfce4-power-manager. Now I've installed the latter and uninstalled the former, which produces the following weird behaviour:
a) If I suspend or hibernate from the Xfce menu or from the panel applet "action buttons", the systems resumes /without/ any password prompt.
b) If I suspend or hibernate from the context menu of the xfce4-power-manager, I get a locked screen after resuming.

Desirable/correct behaviour:
On a system where automatic login has not been activate (which is my case), b) is clearly the correct (i.e. safe) behaviour. However, people who have activated automatic login will want a).
Of course the user can also be given the choice to change this, but it should definitely be the default behaviour.

Conclusions (questions):
* Should the choice to ship Xubuntu with the gnome-power-manager be reconsidered?
* Should this bug be reassigned one or more other packages? (xfce4-power-manager? xubuntu? gnome-power-manager? xfce4-panel?)

Karmic Beta: Still the same behaviour as described in my Post #8 (updated on October 10th, 2009).

Xubuntu already ships xfce4-power-manager by default in karmic.

Yes, and you can set whether or not it asks password on resume from suspend and hibernate in the xfce4-power-manager's preferences. But in Karmic, the log out dialog does not use a power manager to suspend and hibernate. In principle, a log out dialog is not the right place for suspend/hibernate, as those actions do not log out from the current session. (There are other ways to suspend and hibernate, such as using a power manager's tray applet.) If I remember right, an earlier release of Xubuntu had a patch by which a user was able to remove suspend and/or hibernate buttons from the dialog in settings. That said, I think it is good, if you can sometimes suspend/hibernate without locking: In some cases it saves time and reduces the risk of someone getting your password when you know you won't leave your computer.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Lucid Lynx. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. The xfce bug has been signed off as won't fix. It would certainly help to know if this is still an issue in Lucid Lynx.

Until we know if this is still an issue in Lucid Lynx, it is at a standstill. Please don't change the status to confirmed without testing in the development release and commenting as to the bug being fixed or not.

I have to ask this, after reading the Xfce bugzilla, do you have Applications -> Settings -> Xfce4 Power Manager, Extended, check mark on "Lock screen when going for suspend/hibernate" ? Xfce developers have made it clear that this lock is not goin g to be enabled any other way.

Yes, I confirm Applications > Settings > Xfce4 Power Manger > Extended > "Lock screen when going for suspend/hibernate" is activated. Suspending from the Action Buttons still does not lock the screen. Suspending from the Xfce Power Manager applet still does lock the screen.

Thus, nothing new in Lucid Beta 3 (installed from the live cd and updated on March 13th, 2010)

And nothing will change in lucid, people are still expected to use the power manager instead of the logout dialog for that (we can probably hide these buttons though).

I think hiding the suspend and hibernate buttons in the "log out" dialog is a good idea, since they do not log out. Enabling the power manager tray icon by default would be a way to provide access to suspending and hibernating.

Let's do that (Won't Fix like upstream since we don't want to diverge on that).

Just a little comment for somebody that might happen to experience the same bug with XFCE 4.0 package installed from the https://launchpad.net/~xubuntu-dev/+archive/xfce-4.10 (official ppa) on XUbuntu 12.04.

The solution is to go: Settings->Session and Startup->Advanced. Then, under "Shut down", enable the checkbox "Lock screen before sleep".

The 'Fix' was worst of all worlds for me. Before I found that using the Log-Out dialog and removing Suspend/Hibernate from the Action Button to stop me using them there worked although not ideal.

Selecting Hibernate from Log-Out Dialog at least Locked the Screen which was the whole rationale behind logging the bug in the first place!

Removing Hibernate from the log-out dialog? Supposedly all the other suggested settings are supposed to make Hibernate work with the Action buttons but they do not for me at any rate. (xubuntu 12.04.2 precise)

So I forget exactly how but I found a sysfile edit that enables the Hibernate in Log-out dialog. Action Buttons Hibernate/Suspend don't lock screen whatever settings applied in Power Manager. Unfixing the' fix' so to speak, so as to get a workaround messy fix...

Lots of error messages but at least screen is locked on resume.

I would suppose that there should be as I think the Action Buttons look there for settings. There are none. Maybe the easiest thing would be to advise users on adding/configuring xfce4-session to include Hibernate and Suspend properties

Installed hibernate script and uswsusp

Hibernating via logout dialog works even better than before with no errors. snapshotting>>s2disk

Using Action button on xfce panel however results in a hang at the snapshotting stage which never completes.

For some reason choosing the Hibernate option via the panel Action button must be doing something differently to the logout dialog which works. Both now call the same new s2disk program.
