Binary package hint: ubiquity
I began the manual partition option and created a 30 Gig primary partition of type "Do Not use". I was attempting to set aside the space for use to install the laptop recovery CDs with the original operating system. This caused the crash.

Same here on AMD64 box. Will have to use some comandline tools to partition drive :|
