I may have recreated this locally in a lxd container. There is no output in the attached log which points to root cause, so I started the latest trusty daily in lxc and installed the package.

The install failed because 'invoke.rc' failed to start 'xe-daemon'. Trying by hand (and commenting out the "console output" line in the upstart job, showed that the pre-script fails when trying to cat a non-existent /sys/hypervisor/type.

This was at least the problem I had but I can't confirm that this is the exact failure the reporter had.

Summary:
 - My attempt found that in a non-virtualized (no hypervisor) environment the package install fails when xe-daemon's upstart job dies trying to read /sys/hypervisor/type

  * upstart job: Check if /sys/hypervisor/type exists before attempting to
    read it (LP: #1504481).
