Bug Description

I have an Acer Aspire 1642 series WMLi laptop and since introduction of the 2.6.22 series kernel my suspend has been broken. My laptop appears to suspend successfully, but upon returning from suspend the screen does not come back up. The screen is completely black forcing me to perform a hard reset.

My suspend worked fine in Feisty and it is now broken in Gusty.

After a Feisty->Gusty upgrade I have a similar problem with an IBM X41 tablet.

The suspend-to-disk operation seems to take fairly long, but eventually finishes. On resume the boot procedure reaches the Ubuntu splash screen and then stalls indefinitely. Using the suspend key or "echo disk > /sys/power/state" results in the same scenario. I noticed some suggestions elsewhere that this could be related to the graphics driver (the laptop uses i915) - however stopping X does not seem to make a difference.

For me it seems that changing HIBERNATE_MODE to "shutdown" in /etc/default/acpi-support is slightly more successful. On a fresh boot the machine can reliably suspend/resume, but repeating the operation causes it to hang on resume every now and then.

For me the problem persists, hibernate is close to useless on this machine. Following the advice on other bug reports here's some additional information. The dmesg is from a fresh boot.

uname -a

This is a dump of dmesg after a successful suspend/resume cycle. As opposed to the guide I used hibernate instead of sleep - since this is what is causing me problems. I can't really attach a log after a failed attempt since the machine simple hangs indefinately.
sync; echo 1 > /sys/power/pm_trace ; /etc/acpi/hibernate.sh

I can confirm this problem arise with a fresh gutsy install on an ACER 7720G. It sucessfully goes suspend to ram, the laptop switch to a mode where power led slowly blink red, indicating this state. Hitting a key on keyboard, it switch back to red, fans start moving, but screen stays black.
The hibernation (suspend to disk) mode crashes every now and then. This is barely useable.

This make the laptob unusable in conditions where you need to work 15 minutes, clap it, work another 15 minutes, etc

For my laptop it seems the problem can be worked around with the boot parameter ec_intr=0 as hinted by this comment[1] to Bug #50031 [2] which also points to the ThinkWiki with a short explanation[3]

Here is an ACER 5102wlmi. The solution is Disabling the proprietary ATI Drivers from System>Admin>Restrictive Drivers. So it is something that has to do with the ATI Drivers.

Update of informations for this problem on ACER 7720G.

- Hibernate now works properly, if you except in some cases it's unable to reconnect Wifi after that.
- Suspend to Ram works exactly once only. If after a resume i suspend again to ram, it will never resume. Stay with green light, but screen black. So i need to restart laptop after a resume if i want it to suspend again
- I can't disable ATI proprietary drivers, cause ACER 7720g comes with nvidia card :) I'll keep you informed if disabling nvidia proprietary dirver solves problem.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.
