Dear Daniel,
many thanks for the response. Yes, I do have the package grub installed
because I've got a dual boot - Win XP (my old system) and Edubuntu (my
new passion), but, though I searched extensively
for /usr/sbin/update-grub - it doesn't seem to exist.
I'm quite familiar with Windows, but very new to Linux, so I must
confess that this is a new learning curve for me.
Many thanks for any help that you can offer.
Cheers

Rafiq

1. Do you have the package grub installed?
2. If so, does /usr/sbin/update-grub exist?

Please try the following on a console/shell:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall grub

It should bring you back the /usr/sbin/update-grub file.

Thanks very much Daniel,
I will try out your suggestion as soon as I can work around the GDM failure
to load because of an NVIDIA driver incompatibility with my Geforce 4.

Thanks a mill for your help and let me know if there's anything that we can
do for you in Malawi or within this region.

Please try the following on a console/shell:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall grub

It should bring you back the /usr/sbin/update-grub file.

Rafiq, I hope my suggestion to get update-grub back has helped you.

I'm closing this bug as invalid, because it's not a bug in the kernel package itself, when update-grub is missing (but grub itself is installed).

Please open a bug task for "Ubuntu" or another package, which might have caused the removal of update-grub.

Thank you.

Dear Daniel,
I actually hit a blank wall, but I rectified it by installing the
latest version of Ubuntu and all is well.
On another note, I'm trying to install 'Planet' wireless dongles
(802.11g USB)on our office PCs but to no avail. The power indicator
light remains dead and no hardware is detected, however, Win XP has no
problem in installing. Any ideas?
Thanks a million for all your help.
Cheers,

Rafiq
