Bug Description

[Impact]

 * When a deb is downloaded the default handler is not capable of installing on 20.04.

[Test Case]

We should perform this test on Ubuntu 20.04 as well as some flavors to ensure we do not regress.

 * Download any deb in firefox, double click on the downloaded file
   - On Ubuntu this should open "Ubuntu Software"
   - On flavors it should open whatever their default app for handling debs is

[Regression Potential]

 * For Ubuntu, very low, rarely would a user expect to open a deb with file-roller

 * Other flavors of ubuntu are overriding this default and should not be affected. We do need to test this on other flavors to ensure their defaults are still honored.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1873658/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

Hi Brian,

No. After installing. I am doing the 'minimum install' as normal.

We discussed this a bit amongst the release team, and there was a concern that this might not work properly for flavours - which I think that Ken believes is fine, but it would be good to actually verify explicitly.

So please could you flesh out the description to fit the SRU template, and add a test case which makes sure to check all of these mime types for flavours which still seed gnome-software (e.g. boot live session, install -proposed update, try to open each of those mime types).

Just to confirm, I'm using pure Ubuntu 20.04 and not any of the flavours. I'm happy to assist in any testing of the flavours if you would like me to. Just let me know.

An upload of desktop-file-utils to focal-proposed has been rejected from the upload queue for the following reason: "Please add an SRU-appropriate bug description (particularly calling out the other flavour test cases) and re-upload. Thanks!".

Chris Halse Rogers (raof) wrote : Please test proposed package

Hello Peter, or anyone else affected,

Accepted desktop-file-utils into focal-proposed. The package will build now and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/desktop-file-utils/0.24-1ubuntu3 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug, mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-focal to verification-done-focal. If it does not fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-failed-focal. In either case, without details of your testing we will not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s) fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in -proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

While this has been tested on an Ubuntu desktop system, other flavours have not been tested (to ensure they do not regress) so I'm setting the bug back to verification-needed.

I've tested on xubuntu now

- start a new focal xubuntu image
- download the eog focal deb from focal
- clicked on it from the file manager

-> gnome-software is opened

then after installing desktop-file-utils 0.24-1ubuntu3 trying the same steps gave the same result
after restarting the session is was still working as expected
the gio mime command also showed the default was still correct and gnome-software there

setting back to verification-done now
