Bug Description

I upgraded from 7.10 to 8.04 and after the reboot the computer freezes with a blank screen. I had to do a hard reset. Then I started in secure mode and choosed to repair xorg. Then the computer started with no problem.
I think the problem is the new version of the nvidia restricted driver.

My system is ubuntu 8.04 kernel 2.6.24-16-generic
Geforce 8500 GT

Hi mkufleitner,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? (ISOs are available from cdimage.ubuntu.com)

If it remains an issue, could you also attach a new /var/log/Xorg.0.log?
Thanks in advance.

The output of lspci -vvnn would also be worth having.

Hello,

It seems, that my computer/graphics card only works with some versions
of the nvidia driver. The latest working driver is currently 177.67.
Bevor it had worked with 100.something (sorry I don't remember) With
other drivers it freezes bevor it can actually write to Xorg.0.log. It
probably has something to do with my system configuration, because in
Windows Vista, there too only some nvidia drivers work. The same system
freeze happens.

I have attached the output of lspci -vvnn.

I hope it helps.

My mainboard is a MSI MS-7255 (P4M890M) from Medion
Intel Core 2 Duo E4700 2,6Ghz
3 GB RAM
both ubuntu and vista are 64bit
I also have installed Leopard 10.5.5 ;-) and there only Quartz GL works,
I haven't managed to get Quartz Extreme to work.

Windows is not a virus! It's a bug!

This is still a current problem with Hardy 32 bit 8.04.1 all updates 2nd Nov 08.

I am using a Compaq Presario CQ50-110EM.

Enabling the nVidia restricted drivers in Hardware Drivers breaks X.
After enabling them and rebooting, after the usplash screen, where the desktop normally starts up to the GDM screen there is just a black screen and it appears that the entire PC/laptop stopped responding.

No GDM start sound at all.

Is this still a problem? Can you try with Jaunty 9.04 and let us know if this is still an issue? Thank you.

With Intrepid and Jaunty there is no more problem. There are also new versions of the nvidia driver.
But on Vista there are still problems with the driver provided by Microsoft, then I installed the newest driver from nvidia and it worked.
