Reproduced here. Need to reset xorg.conf to boot to GUI, but the error still comes in the log.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in xorg.

I have noticed the exact same error message. I am using an ATI card. So this seems to be in unrelated to specific drivers.

I also have the same issue in Xubuntu Intrepid Alpha 2 (result of uname -a):
Linux xubuntu-intrepid 2.6.26-4-generic #1 SMP Mon Jul 14 18:39:53 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

My graphics card (result of lspci | grep -i vga):
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO] (rev 01)

Today I installed the new xserver-xorg-video-ati and xserver-xorg-video-radeon packages:
xserver-xorg-video-ati:
  Installed: 1:6.9.0-1ubuntu3
xserver-xorg-video-radeon:
  Installed: 1:6.9.0-1ubuntu3

If more information is required, please let me know.
But they also did not resolve this issue

Try adding the following line to the "Module" section of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

Disable "dri2"

save the file and restart the Xserver.

Let me know if it solves the problem.

@ Alberto Milone: I have added the suggested line to my xorg.conf and it did indeed resolve the issue of module dri2 not being loaded.
Thanks for suggestion!

Now the "only" error remaining is:
Messages from the X server:
(EE) No devices detected.
Fatal server error:

I have had this issue before and have not (yet) found a way to resolve it.
Where it comes down to is that no screens are detected on PCI:1:0:1 which is correct since my monitor is connected to PCI:1:0:0
Regardless what I put in my xorg.conf (amongst others BusID "PCI:1:0:0") I keep getting the same error. But I assume this is off topic for this bug ;)

Sorry forgot to add that in the /var/log/Xorg.0.log the following statements are now being made (instead of the error):
...
(WW) "dri2" will not be loaded unless you've specified it to be loaded elsewhere.
...
(II) "dri2" will be loaded even though the default is to disable it.
...

Furthermore I have tried both the "ati" and the "radeon" driver.

I encountered this with Alpha2 on a system with an Nvidia MX440. Greeter crashed immediately. Fail safe didn't fail safely. Trying startx didn't work either.

Disabling dri2 in xorg.conf multiple ways (Modules and Device) did not disable it. According to this FedoraForum thread it's a feature:
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=193698

DId an apt-get update and greeter failed again but eventually got a nice low-res login.

Lots of logs and pictures to follow.

I did install the latest nvidia-glx driver package that supported the card (96?) but it didn't do any better. Still ended up with a dri2 failure and vesa mode.

jhasonxi: your problem is not caused by the lack of the dri2 module. Driver 96 and 71 do not work with the new Xorg in Intrepid (yet) since the new Xorg has a different ABI.

useResa: please attach the following files:
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
/var/log/Xorg.0.log.0
/etc/X11/xorg.conf

Alberto,
Please find attached the xorg.conf that I am trying to use with Xubuntu Intrepid. It is basically a copy of the xorg.conf that works perfectly with my Dreamlinux installation.
What I have added is the Disable "dri2" as suggested by you.

Furthermore also find -- as requested -- the Xorg.0.log.
I could not find an Xorg.0.log.0 file.

For your information: What happens is that my monitor switches to "sleep mode". The light changes from green to orange and I loose all display.
The only way to get it working again is to restart the computer using the power button.

Alberto Milone: That would explain the problems with nvidia driver but that was the last thing I tried so it wouldn't affect all the problems with booting from a new Alpha 2 install and vesa.

1) why did you add these options? Can you try removing them?

Option "May_Need_ForceBIOS" "1"
Option "XaaNoOffscreenPixmaps" "1"

2) Can you try setting Composite to "0"?

@Alberto:
1) These options were suggested in order to get Compiz properly working for my ATI card and they did do the trick in other distros.
I have tried to remove them, no working card
2) Tried setting Composite to 0, also no success.

With both attempts the monitor goes into "sleep mode" and I can only restart the computer by pressing the power button for a longer time.

This bug was fixed in the package xorg-server - 2:1.4.99.906-1ubuntu1

---------------
xorg-server (2:1.4.99.906-1ubuntu1) intrepid; urgency=low

  * Merge with debian experimental, 1.5RC6 (LP: #247120, #253021)
  * Drop 120_fedora_xserver-xaa-evict-pixmaps.patch, because offscreen
    pixmaps are already disabled by default.
  * Drop 124_fix_randr_no_crtc.patch, fixed upstream.
  * Add 130_fedora_call_switchcorekeyboard.patch, a hack to fix fd.o bug
    #16364. Breaks if the first hotplugged keyboard is not the wanted
    keyboard.
  * Patches from upstream master:
    131_remove_open-coded_strcasestr.patch
    - pre-requisite for the rest
    132_add_parsing_for_xkb.options.patch
    - parsing xkb.options didn't work (fd.o #16874)
    133_support_strlist_for_xkboptions.patch
    - allow using a list for xkb.options like before.
    134_protect_against_out_of_bounds.patch
    - protect against potential out-of-bounds indexing.

xorg-server (2:1.4.99.906-1) experimental; urgency=low

  * debian/rules: drop useless handling of nostrip in DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS (this
    is taken care of by dh_strip); make the rules files and xsfbs.mk
    parallel-safe, and enable parallel=n using example code from Debian
    Policy.
  * debian/rules: put the source package name and version in builderstring
    instead of osvendor, add builder email as well; don't explicitly set
    osname, configure sets it to $(uname -srm) by default.
  * New upstream release candidate.
    - fixes 64-bit Xephyr (closes: #491569)
    - work around the DIX losing physical monitor dimensions for randr 1.1
      drivers, in particular nvidia (closes: #488987)
    - make sure RANDR reports refresh as 0 if pixel clock is 0 (closes:
      #490258)
    - doesn't try to load dri2 when it's not built (closes: #491651)
  * Switch to running autoreconf at build time, and build-depend on automake,
    libtool and xutils-dev.
  * Reformat the SGI Free Software License B, to shut up over 1000 lintian
    warnings.
